Tom Stolpman’s Mandate from Day One: “Hide at least 10 cases of every wine we bottle deep inside the cold room and don’t let me touch them!”
Just as Tom predicted: tannins integrated, flavors blossomed, textures fleshed. Luxurious, revelatory wines flourished the only way possible, via patience.
We hoarded these wines to a tipping point. Eventually we ran out of space, and I opened flights of old wines in marathon “best of Stolpman” tastings. Attendees purchased by the case load, and we soon found ourselves with a much more manageable inventory load, more like 5 cases of each wine ever bottled, down to 10,000 bottles total.

Out of the blue, an opportunity arose to buy back a large chunk of old Stolpman wines from an East Coast Distributor. I shipped the pallet back to the winery, knowing these 7-9 year old wines were peaking. For the first time, we offered aged wines to our email list. In doing so, we spread the love to customers who couldn’t travel to Lompoc or LA for vertical tastings. It was a hit.

Updating our Vintage Chart it dawned on us that several of our wines wouldn’t get any better. They had reached the peak of maturity, and darn it, they should be drunk.
The first Biography Collection was born: an offer of 12 different wines from 1998 to 2003. These were the oldest wines in the cellar.

With only a few bottles left of late maturity wines, I’m stuck this year. To create a second twelve bottle offer, I have to release some precious babes. Some are peaking, some are still shy and young; all of these bottles have years of magical shine left. 48 assorted 12 packs available as of January 7th, 2015. Without further ado:
T H E L I S T:
2005 & 2007 La Croce
2005, 2006 & 2007 Estate Syrah
2006 & 2007 Angeli
2007 & 2008 Grenache
2008 Originals Syrah
N O T E S:
2002 Merlot The only Bordeaux Hold-Out in the box, upon tasting, this nuanced wine convinced Tom and Sashi to plant more high-density Merlot in 2004.
2002 Sangiovese Every long-term Stolpman customer knows the longer Sangiovese ages, the better it is. We’ve done it for you here. 30 months in barrel and then a decade in bottle.
2005 & 2007 La Croce 2005 La Croce is Creative Director Kari Crist’s favorite Stolpman bottling ever and after an hour decanted, the 2007 might one day catch up.
2005, 2006 & 2007 Estate Syrah Our flagship wine at its peak age, 7-9 years in bottle. In a perfect world, Sashi’s unfiltered piece of art would only be drunk in this phase. If you don’t know….
2006 & 2007 Angeli The very best Stolpman Syrah. The 2006 took 5 years to unveil; both now show the pedigree Sashi saw all along.
2007 & 2008 Grenache These two wines sold out before many tried them. Thank God we squirreled some away. Just to answer emails in advance: These are the absolute last bottles of 2008 Grenache. They are only available by purchasing the 12 bottle Biography Collection.
2008 Originals Syrah The first vintage of Originals Syrah, and what a vintage to start! Reduced Yields and June heat produced a walloping Syrah that has settled into a stunner.
