Blend : 62% Grenache / 28% Syrah / 10% Mourvedre

Typically, we make our Stolpman Estate Rose from 100% Grenache.  Not receiving irrigation or rainfall all summer, these vines deliver intensity and layered textures all within the crisp package of a dry rose.

Our rose-filled weekend in Cassis and Bandol in June of 2019 (in between Syrah research visits in the Northern Rhone) only deepened our love for Mourvedre-based rose wines.  The only problem?  The only Mourvedre we have planted on the vineyard is the coveted pre-clonal, own-rooted, 6,000 vine/acre hand-farmed Pliocene block.  Despite the high costs of farming here, we designated the lower section of the block for the 2020 estate rose, just this 10% addition made a prettier, more intricate rose!

Following the Labor Day heat wave, La Cuadrilla combed through every Syrah block on the vineyard and selected clusters from any vine that appeared stressed following the heat.  This resulted in 28% of the 2020 estate rose’s final blend.  The Syrah was direct-pressed and contributed yet another component of this benchmark rose vintage.

Soft, light salmon-pink in color, the 2020 is the most delicate and fine-tuned estate rose to date.  Based on our love for this wine, this blend will certainly be the path forward for our estate rose program. Blooming rose petals on the nose with a swirl of lychee, white peach, hibiscus, and rhubarb all tightly woven into a pristinely delicate pink wine.  A lively “sweet and sour melon” carries through the finish married with the crisp, clean back palate.
